How to Check Real-Time River Flooding: NOAA Forecasts and USGS Gauges

To check current river flooding in the United States, start with the NOAA National Water Prediction Service (NWPS) for the nearest forecast location, then confirm the same river reach with a USGS streamgage. A FEMA flood map answers a different question: long-term or regulatory exposure. None of these screens replaces a National Weather Service warning or instructions from local emergency officials.

The useful check is not simply whether a map is blue. It is whether you are looking at the right river location, a current timestamp, the correct unit, and the right time horizon for the decision you need to make.

Use the source that matches the time horizon

Long-term maps, observations, forecasts, and warnings can all be correct while showing different things. Keep their roles separate before comparing numbers.

Start with the nearest NOAA forecast location

Open NWPS, search or pan to the area, and select a forecast point on the river you actually need. NOAA states that the service includes official NWS streamflow forecasts, stream observations, flood category levels, flood impacts, crest history, and location metadata; the NWPS data-services description also makes clear that the ordinary application data are not a full historical archive.

  1. Confirm the forecast point name, river or creek name, and nearby community before reading the graph.
  2. Note the observation and forecast timestamps, time zone, and whether the graph uses stage, flow, or both.
  3. Read the current value separately from the forecast crest and the time attached to that crest.
  4. Check the listed flood category and impacts, if present, rather than guessing from the line color alone.
  5. Save the location link or identifier so a later check uses the same point.

A forecast hydrograph is a model-informed prediction, not a promise. Rainfall, upstream releases, ice, debris, and later observations can change the expected crest. Reopen the current source instead of relying on a screenshot saved hours earlier.

Match the forecast point to a USGS streamgage

Use the USGS National Water Dashboard to locate a nearby monitoring station and inspect the latest measured stage or streamflow. USGS describes the dashboard data as real-time information from observation stations, but the public viewer also identifies the readings as provisional. That makes them valuable for situational awareness, not a surveyed high-water mark or a final engineering record.

Do not compare two graphs just because their place names look similar. A NOAA forecast point and a USGS gauge may sit at different bridges, tributary junctions, or elevations. Match the station name, coordinates, site number, datum, unit, and timestamp. If the points are several miles apart or a tributary enters between them, describe them as separate locations rather than treating the values as interchangeable.

Use an inundation map only where a local map library exists

The USGS flood-information page links to the Flood Inundation Mapper, which provides local map sets showing possible flood extent and depth for selected stream conditions. Coverage is not nationwide at the same level of detail. If no inundation library is available for the relevant reach, do not borrow a map from another gauge or stretch a nearby boundary to the property.

Where a library does exist, select the stage that corresponds to the same gauge and read the legend, model notes, and map date. The shaded area is a scenario tied to that water level. It does not certify the depth at a particular building, account for every local blockage, or replace an evacuation order.

Keep the long-term map separate from today’s river level

Use the FEMA flood-map address guide when the question is the effective flood zone, panel, or mapped base flood information. Use the flood-map update-date check to confirm which map version applies. Those maps describe long-term or regulatory flood hazards; they are not live gauges and do not show whether a storm is happening now.

The reverse is also true. A river that is below flood stage today can still be in a mapped flood hazard area, and a location outside a mapped high-risk zone can still flood from intense rainfall, drainage failure, or an event beyond the mapped scenario.

Treat a warning as the action signal

The National Weather Service explains that a Flood Watch means prepare, while a Flood Warning means take action. A Flash Flood Warning indicates that dangerous flooding is imminent or occurring and can develop within minutes to hours. Do not wait for a river graph to match your expectation before following a warning, evacuation order, road closure, or direction from local emergency management.

If water is rising around you, move to a safer location and follow local instructions. Never enter a flooded road to verify a map or gauge reading. This page is a source-routing guide, not an emergency alert service.

When a graph is missing, stale, or surprising

  • Recheck the timestamp and time zone before assuming the water level is current.
  • Look for a missing-data, equipment, ice, estimated-value, or provisional-data note.
  • Confirm whether the displayed number is stage, discharge, or a forecast value.
  • Try the nearest upstream and downstream stations, but keep their locations separate in your notes.
  • Check the local NWS office and emergency-management messages for conditions not represented by the gauge.
  • For a property decision, ask the local floodplain manager or a qualified professional about the relevant map and site conditions.

Save enough detail to make the next check comparable

Record the source, station or forecast-point identifier, river name, timestamp, unit, observed value, forecast crest and valid time, and any active watch or warning. A clean record prevents a later graph from being compared with the wrong station or an earlier issue time.
