For a U.S. address, start with FEMA Map Service Center; for another country, use the government service responsible for that location. Search the exact address or coordinates, verify where the map placed the point, choose the hazard and purpose, and save the legend and map date with the result. There is no single worldwide “flood zone” system, and an address result normally describes mapped conditions around a location rather than predicting whether one building will flood.

A national site can be a map, a directory, or both. Canada’s GEO.ca may lead to the province or local authority responsible for the current hazard map. Australia’s AFRIP identifies older studies and their commissioning organizations; it should not replace a current council or state record. Record the final authority, not only the national landing page.
Select the map by decision, not by colour

The same address can correctly receive different answers from a long-term map, a planning map, and a current warning service because each uses a different time horizon and decision rule. Name the purpose in the first line of your notes. That prevents a planning layer from being presented as today’s warning or a U.S. FEMA label from being applied in another country.
Run the address check so another person can repeat it
- Copy the full address, postcode or ZIP, municipality, country, and reliable coordinates when available.
- Open the official source for that jurisdiction and purpose; note whether it is a map, directory, catalogue, or warning service.
- Search the address and inspect the returned label and point. Correct a road-centre, postcode-centroid, or neighboring-address match before reading the hazard.
- Turn on one hazard at a time: river, coastal, surface water, groundwater, reservoir, dam, or another source named by the authority.
- Copy the probability or zone exactly as defined in that service; do not translate “high” or a colour into another country’s category.
- Record whether defences and climate change are included, the map/study/effective date, and any layer update date.
- Save the source URL, legend, scale, screenshot or report, checked date, and the limitation stated by the authority.
Read five fields before deciding what the map means

An address search can look more precise than the underlying model. The point may locate the neighborhood while the hazard layer is strategic or area-based. Floor height, openings, drainage, defenses, local structures, and site grading may not appear at that scale. State whether the result applies to an area, mapped point, parcel, or building; do not silently move between them.
When two official maps disagree, compare their jobs first

Do not average categories or choose the more reassuring map. Preserve both results and write the disagreement as a testable question: for example, “Which layer controls this planning application?” or “Which effective FEMA panel and LOMC apply to this structure?” The organization making the decision should answer that narrow question.
Recover from an address with no visible result
- Retry the complete address, postcode or ZIP, locality, alternate spelling, and coordinates accepted by the service.
- Confirm the country and subnational jurisdiction; England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland use different routes.
- Check that the hazard layer is turned on and that the map is zoomed to a supported scale.
- Follow a national directory to the province, territory, state, council, conservation authority, or municipality that owns the current map.
- Look for a separate archive, effective map, preliminary product, or local study and keep its date visible.
- Report “not found with this source and query on this date,” not “no flood risk.”

This card preserves the evidence needed for a later update without promising a property outcome. A map can support risk awareness and still leave open whether one structure floods, which insurance terms apply, what a lender requires, or whether a development is acceptable. Current emergency instructions always come from the responsible live-warning and emergency services, not a long-term map.
Country-routing questions
Is there one official flood map for the United Kingdom?
No. England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have separate services. Each also distinguishes long-term or area risk from current conditions, and planning may use another product.
Can FEMA show a flood zone for an address outside the United States?
FEMA’s NFIP maps are U.S. program products. Use the responsible government source for another country and keep its own categories and definitions.
Does an unshaded address mean the building cannot flood?
No. It means the selected layer did not display a mapped extent at that location and scale. Coverage, unmodeled sources, local drainage, building characteristics, and events beyond the mapped scenario remain separate issues.
